First cycle rides in Stockholm!

I really like cycling, as it is a way to explore new areas and reach out bit farther than you would by foot. I got into it as a medium of transport to make my commutes shorter, but soon I was all in finding myself riding with a group that later became friends. I ended up selling my old bike when I left UK, and received my new one in June. It’s a steel frame Condor, and I am super happy with it!

The start of studies has been really busy, so I finding the time for time-intensive hobbies can be a challenge. I live right next to SSE, so I think it is healthy to expand living environment a bit every once in a while. Having submitted my first assignment a day early, I could take Sunday morning off and head out to scout the wider Stockholm area. The day was brilliant, could not hoped for better weather to explore the nearby islands! The sky was blue and cloudless, and sun was shining still very warmly. The views from the high bridges connecting the islands were quite spectacular. I went west of city to Lovön, which is most famous for the Drottningholm Palace, the official residence of the King. The area is truly beautiful, complete with a lake and large free-to-enter gardens. This would be a nice day trip without a bike too, as it is reachable by public transport. Might have to go back again :)

My second ride went farther out, but in the same direction. This time I joined some people I met through a cycling cafe, so I had some local guides to show the way and push the pace. Together with transfer journeys we covered around 80 km, which is the longest ride I have done this far. It was hot, I did not feel fresh, and my company was fitter than me, but I truly enjoyed the ride. And most importantly, the cake stop halfway was exceptional.

First impression on cycling in Stockholm is that there are lot of separate, one-way cycle lanes in the city centre, which are really the best for all parties involved. Outside the city there were a lot of riders out, and it felt very safe to be on roads. Also the speed limits were ok and did not have any problems with cars. My route needs a bit of tweaking, as the journey through the city could be improved to something that is not right next to highway.
